Soweto Online

Soweto is an iconic and historic cluster of townships located / south-west of Johannesburg. In fact, the name Soweto is an acronym for “South Western Townships” - a name officially adopted in 1963. Soweto has been home to long list of world-renowned South Africans including Trevor Noah, Terry Pheto, Cyril Ramaphosa, Desmond Tutu, and Nelson Mandela.

Tembisa #MyKasi

Tembisa is one of South Africa's largest townships by population (#2 according to Census 2011 stats). It is located in the Ekurhuleni Metro, north of Kempton Park, and is neighboured by Ivory Park & Ebony Park. Its name means "to give promise" or "to give hope".

Katlehong #MyKasi

Established in 1945, its name means "the place of success". Katlehong is neighboured by two other prominent townships, Vosloorus & Thokoza. Together, these share a combined population of 670 000 residents. A notable Katlehong success story is that of Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, who was appointed Vice Chancellor of Wits University in 2021.

Soshanguve #MyKasi

Soshanguve is one of South Africa's largest townships by population (#5 according to Census 2011 stats). The name Soshanguve is an acronym for "Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni, and Venda" - a clue to this community's cultural & linguistic diversity. It is located in the City of Tshwane, north of Pretoria. Along its western border, it is neighboured by Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane, and (in some places) the North West Province.

Sebokeng is one of South Africa's largest townships by population (#10 according to Census 2011 stats). It is located in the Sedibeng District in region known as the 'Vaal', and is neighboured by Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark, Orange Farm, Evaton, and Sharpville. The name Sebokeng means "gathering place".

Mamelodi #MyKasi

Mamelodi is one of South Africa's largest townships by population (#7 according to Census 2011 stats). It is located in the City of Tshwane, east of Pretoria. The name Mamelodi means "the mother of melodies" or "a person who makes a great melody".

Established in 1912, Alexandra is South Africa’s oldest official township. While its reputation for difficulty and struggle has earned it some notorious nicknames like Dark City or Gomora, the many good and God-fearing residents who call this community their home, simply know it as Alex.
